The whole purpose of life for many is the mere accumulation of riches and material possessions. This group mindset has been passed down from generation to generation and is accepted as fact. Yet, acquisition of riches fails to satisfy the hunger in every soul.
Success is personal and can't be defined against a standard set by society. No schools can teach anyone how to be successful as it must be defined by the individual. While some may see wealth as their idea of success, others may see it as having a happy home life, even if that home life exists in the primitive of conditions. Still others may not find a purpose in life unless they run their own business.
So what is success based on and how can anyone become a success?
The Definition of Success
Since it is personal, everyone must make their own judgments on what would make them successful. They must take an inventory of their talents and abilities and how those talents can be made to produce the desired result.
Setting Up the Plan
Success is never accomplished unless there is a plan for its achievement. Besides the misconception of what success really means, the failure to plan comes a close second. Too many people merely drift through life. They have defined success, but they haven't created the plan to get there. So they continue to fail, hoping that somehow their dreams will be realized at the next lottery draw.
Limiting Beliefs
It's one of the biggest reasons why so many people fail to get what they want from life. They find the reasons why they can't reach their dreams. The rich and famous don't dwell on negatives. They see success as their right and strive for it against all odds.
Limiting Habits
Successful people have learned to define what is valuable to what is frivolous. They may desire to watch Monday night football, but unless they are a coach or involved in the sport, they don't waste time in a pursuit that doesn't move them toward their goal. This doesn't mean that life exists only for the the slavery of constant work and effort, merely it means knowing how to delegate time for maximum results.
Positive Relationships
Associating with the wrong people can drag down hope of achieving worthwhile goals. Role models, support from family and friends are all key ingredients that lead to success. Good relations motivate and stimulate production.
Adjusting to Change
Nothing ever remains static. What works today won't work tomorrow. The successful have learned to be flexible. There is always another way to do things, another method to reach the goal. Setbacks don't break the bank, they only teach that the method used didn't work. It's said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, but expecting different results. Unfortunately, this is the route most people take.
The Rule of Choice
When it comes to breaking a habit, many people feel helpless. They feel victimized by the cigarette or that extra drink. But neither cigarettes, nor alcohol has any power at all unless they are considered to have it. Society labels everything a disease which is convenient as it gives the smoker, the alcoholic or the drug addict a good excuse for making the choice not to quit. In a life and death situation, most addicted smokers would forget to pull out a cigarette when their lives are at stake. Deciding to make a choice is what moves people forward. It overcomes procrastination and fear.
Success can never be achieved from the living room sofa. Defining success, setting a plan of action, overcoming habits and associating with like-minded people will help move anyone to fulfill their personal goals whether that is service to mankind or acquiring a new home.
