South Carolina Nursing Schools and Allied Health Programs
South Carolina is in the midst of a nursing shortage- especially in rural areas and at Find
Schools
Now large teaching hospitals- that is expected to intensify as nurses and baby boomers age and the need for health care grows. Despite the economic slowdown, "Many of the teaching hospitals are still facing some very significant vacancy rates of 12 to 13 percent," said Jimmy Walker, SVP for regulatory and work force issues for the South Carolina Hospital Association. In specialty areas for nurses such as medical-surgery, intensive care units and emergency services, Walker said, "You find a very significant shortage in critical areas." Recent projections indicate South Carolina faces a projected shortage of 15,000 nurses -- or about 18 percent of the needed workforce by the year 2020. The demand for RN's and other health care workers will only continue rising as the 78 million "baby boomers" age and require additional health care. Educators and health planners see the growing demand for nurses not only as a need for additional personnel but also for additional education, with more nurses prepared in baccalaureate programs that emphasize leadership, patient education, case management, and care across a variety of acute care and outpatient settings. Nurse Educators, BSN prepared nurses, home health nurses, and all advanced practice specialties -clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives, and nurse anesthetists-are in high demand in both rural and urban areas.
In order to meet the increasingly complex demands of today's health care environment, many healthcare agencies prefer or require a minimum of a bachelor's degree for their nursing staff, so now is the perfect time for LPN's to enroll in an online LPN to RN program, or LPN to BSN degree program, for RN's to take an online RN-BSN degree completion program, or RN to MSN bridge program, and for BSN nurses to earn a MS in Nursing degree.
