Organization Tips For Online Students

Home >> Organization Tips For Online Students

paperclips
Enrollment in online universities is soaring thanks to the convenience of being able to advance one's education and improve career opportunities without giving up a regular paycheck in the process, but success in online courses requires commitment and use of a few essential study skills.

One such skill that can mean the difference between passing and failing for an online student is organization. The good news is that even if you're a slob by nature and you can never remember where you left your keys, you can learn how to effectively stay organized.

Physical Organization

You might choose to keep everything you do for your schoolwork on your computer, but some people have a whiteboard, notebook, or files to stay physically organized while pursuing online education.

1. Write it on the board.
You might want to consider investing in a quality whiteboard or chalkboard. If you have room, hang one by your computer to write down crucial times, dates, assignments due this week, and so on. You can use it as motivation to get started on your coursework rather than wasting time on the computer, if that tends to be a problem for you.

2. Note it down.
If you don't like or trust computers, buy a notebook and write down all the information you need in it. The course syllabus, contact people for various departments and their email addresses, assignment due dates, and important notes go in this notebook. Always be sure to keep it in one location, so you know where to find it at all times.

3. File it away.
Another investment that might pay off well is a filing cabinet, or even a mini hanging file stand that has enough room to several folders. Dedicate one hanging file to each course you take, and store your course syllabus and assignments there. Print out copies of everything important you send to teachers, and your most concise notes. If you lose power or your computer dies, you have copies of everything to refer to.

Electronic Organization

Since you're getting an online education, electronic organization is obviously crucial to your success. Accidents happen, and you'll find yourself short of time or needing to quickly find and submit an old assignment again.

1. Keep track of deadlines.
Start a text or Word file (with a separate section for each class, if you like) and list your upcoming assignment deadlines. If you want to really motivate yourself, save it on your desktop to remind yourself of the upcoming deadlines every time you see it.

2. Sort files to quickly find what you want.
Create a folder named "School" or something similar, and make sure it's in a place that's easy to remember (like your documents folder or desktop). Then, create a folder inside your School folder for each course you're taking. When you type up assignments or take notes, make sure they're saved in the appropriate folder. When it comes time to submit assignments (or resubmit them if an accident happens and the system doesn't recognize the submission), study for exams, or you just need to refer to something quickly while in the middle of a class, you'll thank yourself.

3. Back it up.
You spent a lot of time on your schoolwork, polishing and perfecting the assignments. Don't let your time go to waste when your computer crashes and you lose your files! Back up your schoolwork regularly. This is easy to learn, and you can do it several different ways. Try burning work to CD-RWs or DVD-RWs, backing it up to a USB flash drive, or using a web backup application like Dropbox so that you can access files from the web on any computer and automatically back them up each time you save them.

If you make an effort to follow these tips and stay organized, you'll never lose important coursework or deadline information again!
