Nursing Informatics: Ushering In 21st Century Nursing Practice
President Obama's health care reform plan, which includes plans to convert medical information and records into electronic information systems, is creating a growing demand for nursing informatics professionals in health care organizations and in businesses that develop and sell health care information technology.
What is Nursing Informatics?
In 2008, the American Nurses Association (ANA) defined this growing field in its Scope and Standards for Nursing Informatics Practice as "a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge and wisdom in nursing practice."For example, a Nursing informatics Specialist might integrate data, information, and clinical knowledge in order to ensure better nurse staffing based upon patient acuity levels to enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.
The Need for Nursing Informatics Professionals
In June, President Obama spoke at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates in Chicago. Obama described in detail his vision for health care reform.Digitizing medical records for all American citizens was one of the action items he explained.Obama stated, "It simply doesn't make sense that patients in the 21st century are still filling out forms with pens on papers that have to be stored away somewhere."
One of the primary goals of Informatics Nurses is to design and implement systems that improve documentation accuracy, eliminate unnecessary work, enhance accuracy and enable analysis of clinical data. "Informatics nurses and specialists have the potential to improve patient care, make the value of nursing visible, reduce the burden of paperwork, and improve communications within an interdisciplinary team[2]."
As expert practitioners, informatics nurses and specialists provide new tools that help clinicians to practice, educators to teach, students to learn, researchers to investigate, policymakers to deliberate, and consumers to manage their own health. In all these ways, Informatics Nurses and Specialists pursue a fundamental nursing goal,"to improve the health of populations, communities, families, and individuals by optimizing information management and communication[3]."
