Medical Billing and Coding Training
Closely working with the medical billers are the medical coders. Medical coding is specifically focused on healthcare claims and reimbursements. Medical coders extract treatments and services delivered from a patient's medical records. They then assign codes to these services according to the type of procedure and the level of skill necessary. The coders have to use appropriate codes from different coding systems according to certain guidelines and compliance requirements. In medical science, new clinical techniques and procedures are constantly being developed and coding systems constantly updated. Medical coders have to keep up with the latest developments to fully understand the claims they are handling. Continuing training and education for medical coders are therefore a must. The salary of medical coders and billers would depend on their level of training and skills. Generally, the coders have slightly higher hourly rate. Traditionally, there was no specific formal educational program towards medical billing and coding. Many billers and coders started as medical secretaries and assistants but have gained invaluable on-the-job training to move to more technology-driven responsibilities. However, the high demand in the job market for these tasks urged educational institutions to offer programs. Several national certifications in medical coding can be voluntarily obtained through exams. Certifications in coding are available either from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Training in Medical Billing and Coding is available online and through many training institutes across the Unites States.
