LPN to RN Degrees: Taking the next step in your nursing career.

Like everyone else, most individuals in the healthcare industry wish to advance their careers. However, the complex nature of the nursing field requires a furthering of education in order to advance within a medical career. Many LPN's have a desire to pursue a degree as a RN in order to achieve the advancement they wish to obtain.

What is the biggest motivator for obtaining a RN degree?

One of the most compelling reasons that a LPN wants to become a RN is to increase their earning potential. According to Salary.com the average salary in the United States for a LPN is just over $37,000 per year, while the average salary for a RN is just under $59,000. That is a 60% increase over the annual LPN salary! The cost to further your education can pay for itself in under a year, while you continue to make the increase in salary for years to come.

What if you can't afford to pay for continuing education?

If the cost of obtaining your RN degree is a concern, there are many avenues of help available to you. Federal and state financial aid is available to those who qualify. Nearly everyone qualifies for Federal Student Loans. These are very low interest loans that are available regardless of a annual household income and you are not required to begin making payments until six months after you leave school!

Most employers in the healthcare industry offer tuition reimbursement to their employees. They generally reimburse employees in one of two ways: 100% reimbursement for all courses passed, and/or a percentage of reimbursement dependent upon the grade the student achieves. Either way, it is a benefit to the student (who gains an education and ability for advancement) and the employer (who gains a more highly educated employee).

How can you return to school when you have to work full-time?

Some colleges now offer the LPN to RN program via online courses. These courses allow the student to obtain their college degree from the comfort of their own home when it is convenient for them. You no longer have to take time off work in order to attend classes. Through online courses you can now obtain your degree without having to lose any income. Financial Aid applies to online courses the same as campus based courses.
