The words "essay test" strike terror into the hearts of students everywhere. Often considered hard at best, impossible at worst, they present a more formidable challenge than multiple choice tests. However, studying for essay tests doesn't have to be so scary. Keep in mind that the prep you need for an essay test is different for that of a multiple choice test and follow these approaches to success.
Looking At The Broad Picture...
The important thing to remember when you set out to study for an essay test is that connections between ideas are just as important as specific facts. Knowing how concepts relate to each other is crucial for writing a structured essay that the instructor can follow and that demonstrates your deep comprehension of the material. With this in mind, start by writing "simple outlines" of the big ideas and smaller concepts. Don't worry about filling in specifics; just try to get an idea of how the broad ideas relate to each other.
If you learn better visually, draw a diagram to help prep for an essay test. Put a concept in a circle and then draw lines to smaller, related concepts. Continue branching out until you have a web of information to study. Or, draw a Venn diagram with two big overlapping circles. In one circle write anything that pertains to one concept and not the other. In the other circle, do the opposite. In the middle, list what the two share in common. This will give your study time an excellent visual guide.
Discuss with others how the concepts relate to what you already know or are learning in other classes. The idea is to back away from the facts and look at the big picture. The more connections you can create to the concepts, the more "pathways" you will have for remembering the information. Plus, discussing with others who are not studying for the same test will help you examine the material from different perspectives.
Think Like Your Professor...
When studying for an essay test, try to think like the instructor, imagining possible questions. Pick two or more concepts that interact with each other. For example, things they share in common, can be contrasted, influenced each other etc. Then write a list of the ways in which they do so. For example, with "women's rights" and the "19th century reform movement" you could write a list of ways in which they influenced each other or make a list of prominent leaders that contributed to both.
You can improve upon Step 3 by switching questions/lists with a friend. That way you can prepare for dealing with the unexpected on the actual essay test.
