Some people find that they can work just fine with music on, or in an environment where there’s a lot of bustle and chatter, while others need absolute silence in order to concentrate. Know your own learning style, and carve out a space for yourself that facilitates productivity.
Take advantage of forums designed to promote interactivity between yourself, the instructor and the other students taking the online course. Typically, you’ll be asked to participate in message forums, blogs or instant messaging sessions that give students an opportunity to network with each other and get questions answered. Remember the adage: “the only stupid question is the one that isn’t asked.” It is, perhaps, truer in the world of online learning than anywhere else, given that students new to the virtual classroom have a lot to learn about the learning environment as well as the material being studied.
Finally, don’t forget to implement the same tried-and-true strategies that lead to success in the traditional classroom. Get involved in the course to the greatest possible degree. Ask questions and seek answers on your own. Create a well-defined goal, and chart your progress as you move toward it. Reward yourself for your accomplishments, identify specific ways you can improve on your setbacks and shortcomings, and make sure to leave time to unwind.
