How to Know When a Career Change is Needed

changing careers

It’s not uncommon to wake up on a weekday morning wondering “how do I know if I need a career change?” Actually, it occurs everyday for many people who are getting ready for another dreadful week at a dull job asking themselves why they do what they do for a living. If you are starting to wonder this same thing on a regular basis, or if your job has lost its spark and you are experiencing boredom at work, perhaps it may be time that you start looking at other career paths as possibilities to end this cycle.

Changing careers can be a fearful event, even for the most confident of professionals. Sometimes, people choose to just deal with the work they have purely out of fear of the change that comes with switching careers. However in some cases, a career change is necessary so that working doesn’t become a continual source of stress and disappointment. Over time, these bad feelings can lead to a negative attitude about work and life in general which can lead to long term damage to the self esteem and even physical symptoms that can become illnesses. If you dread going to work daily or you are experiencing more stress than normal, then it's probably a good time for a career change.

Sometimes, a career change is necessary for health reasons. While this can be upsetting, particularly when you are in a career you like, there is hope that a career that is gentler on your physical self can be found within your passion. Having a job that can offer the ability to work in a less physically demanding way doesn’t diminish your value as a professional. If you love your career and have to step down, or if you decide to change careers as a result of a handicapping condition or illness, it just means you are smart enough to make modifications to preserve your well-being.

Think about what made you decide upon the career that you find yourself in now or a talent you have and you will probably discover certain aspects that you liked and were excited about when you first started out. Once you’ve identified the positive qualities about the work you do presently, you will be able to start a plan to make a career change that works for you.

It may actually surprise you to find that work can be a very fulfilling experience that you can enjoy if you so desire. You don't have to make yourself miserable everyday enduring a job that no longer has meaning for you. That's a sure sign that you are ready to move on to something more suited to your unique skills and needs. Finding the right career for you is the key to discovering workplace happiness.

Healthcare sector adding jobs despite recession

As I post this, the "official" unemployment number stands at 9.7%, over 16% when those working part time but looking for full time work is added in, and over 20% if those whose unemployment benefits have run out are counted. Despite the fact that hundreds of thousands of workers are still losing their jobs every month, the healthcare sector has actually added 544,000 jobs since the recession began, with 28,000 new positions added in August, 2009 alone.

Many adult learners are flocking to career schools and online schools to take advantage of allied health career training programs, nursing degree programs, healthcare administration programs, and related degree programs that prepare them for high demand healthcare careers in Health Information Technology, Medical Assisting, Disaster Management, and Public Health.

The Allied health professions, include more than 100 occupational titles, employ approximately 2 million workers in the United States, and is the fastest growing occupation field in the country. The BLS anticipates that 3.6 million more health care jobs will be created by 2014, and those health care jobs will involve many career fields besides doctors and nurses. Could one of them be right for you?
