Beat The Recession With A Health Care Career

Today's BLS employment report shows that the nation's unemployment rate rose above 10% for the first time since 1983 as employers continued to trim jobs from payrolls during this longest and deepest downturn since the Great Depression. Although the Obama administration estimated last month that 640,000 jobs were created or "saved" by the federal stimulus package passed earlier this year, that's modest compared to the 7.3 million jobs that have been lost the start of 2008.

Everyone has witnessed the enormous shift in the world of manufacturing, with tens of thousands of high paying jobs disappearing or being shipped overseas to lower cost countries. The world of work is changing, and those who fail to adapt to the new realities risk being left behind. That is why it is so critical for workers entering the workforce – or training for new careers – to focus on the growth industries. Health care is one of those growth industries, having added another 45,000 jobs last month, and the pace is only expected to accelerate as the population ages. Entering a top quality nursing school or allied health training program is an excellent way to secure your future and get in on the ground floor of a fast growing profession.

If you're one of the millions of out of work Americans looking for a new career and a new direction in life, you might want to consider training for a health care job. There are many reasons why this could be a smart move, including the fact that health care careers are among the most stable private sector jobs left. Even as companies are cutting back and laying off employees, government agencies, hospitals, doctors, medical clinics, diagnostic centers, and other health care employers are still hiring, and that is good news for those taking the initiative to enroll in either nursing school or allied health training programs.

According to the BLS, as many as 3.6 million more health care jobs will be created by 2014, and those health care jobs will involve many career fields in addition to nursing. In fact, Allied Health professions offer the fastest growing job opportunities in the country and include more than 100 occupational titles such as Medical Assisting, Medical Imaging, Dental Assisting, Physical Therapy, Medical Billing & Coding, Medical Transcription, Psychology, and Counseling are just a few of the growing number of Allied Health Professions.

A Nursing Degree Provides Many Unique Opportunities

Many people assume that all nurses work in hospitals and doctors offices, but that is not the reality. In fact those who hold nursing degrees are employed in all sorts of settings, from hospitals and health care clinics to insurance companies and government agencies. Nurses review claims for insurance companies and government entities in order to make sure payments are made correctly. Nurses work in colleges and universities where they train the health care workers of tomorrow. And nurses work in administration, helping to make sure hospitals, medical clinics and private practices run efficiently.

Make A Lasting Difference With A Career in Health Care

While you might not win a Nobel prize, save the world single-handed, bring about world peace, or eliminate global hunger, few career fields offer the opportunity to personally impact the lives of others in such a positive and meaningful manner as nursing and allied health careers offer. Unlike so many careers nursing or allied health jobs provide a real sense of satisfaction at the end of the day. Health care careers also provides workers with the opportunity to earn a very good living, and the current shortage of nurses and allied health professionals have caused salaries to rise even higher. While becoming a nurse or earning a degree in one of the many allied health professions may not save the world, it will provide a stable career with plenty of upward mobility while earning a very competitive income and give you a unique opportunity to make the world a better place -one patient at a time. At the end of the day, when everything's said and done, and the last page closes in the great book of life, isn't that what a life well lived is all about?
