National Nurses Week to Be Celebrated May 6-12
Nurses: Caring Today for a Healthier Tomorrow

Often described as an art and a science, nursing is a profession that embraces dedicated people with varied interests, strengths and passions because of the many opportunities the profession offers.
As nurses, we work to improve health care in many ways, from bedside nursing in hospitals and long-term care facilities to the halls of research institutions, state legislatures, and Congress, and disaster response to name a few. Registered Nurses strive to meet the ever-expanding health care needs of American society and serve with a passion for the profession and with a strong commitment to patient safety. At some point in their lives, everyone is directly or indirectly affected by the work nurses do.
On May 6, 2010, RnDegrees.net is joining the American Nurses Association in celebrating Nurses: Caring Today for a Healthier Tomorrow, as part of National Nurses Week, which begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, Florence Nightingale's birthday. The purpose of Caring Today for a Healthier Tomorrow is to raise awareness of the value of nursing and help educate the public about the role nurses play in meeting the health care needs of the American people.
This National Nurses Week is especially significant since the United Nations has declared 2010 to be "the International Year of the Nurse", and because it also marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Florence Nightingale, who is revered for pioneering the foundations of professional nursing. Noted as a nurse, writer, statistician and author of the classic Nightingale: Notes on Nursing: What it is, and What it is Not,
Nightingale's methods were revolutionary in her time, and they form the basis for the techniques of patient management that have been taught ever since.
In honor of the dedication, commitment, and tireless effort of the nearly 3.1 million registered nurses nationwide to promote and maintain the health of this nation, the ANA and RnDegrees.net are proud to recognize registered nurses everywhere on this particular day for the quality work they provide seven days a week, 365 days a year.
RN's Top Projected Job Growth List
According to projections released in February 2004 from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, RNs top the list of the 10 occupations with the largest projected job growth in the years 2002-2012. Although RNs have been among the top 10 growth occupations in the past, this is the first time in recent history that RNs have ranked first.
According to the BLS report, more than 2.9 million RNs will be employed in the year 2012, up 623,000 from the nearly 2.3 million RNs employed in 2002. However, the total job openings, which include both job growth and the net replacement of nurses, will be more than 1.1 million. This growth, coupled with current trends of nurses retiring or leaving the profession and fewer new nurses, could lead to a shortage of more than one million nurses by the end of this decade.
ANA President Rebecca Patton recently said, "Nursing is about growing and adapting to meet the public’s needs. Now is the time for all nurses to fully embrace and provide a new, even stronger level of leadership, partnering with physicians, pharmacists, and other health care professionals to direct and manage care effectively".
