How to Build a Professional Relationship

Submitted by Admin on September 24, 2009, 6:09 am 1 Comments

Building a successful professional relationship can feel like a daunting task but it doesn't have to feel that way. One of the largest challenges for those attempting to build a professional relationship is getting past the icebreaker. The first impression is extremely important and how you come off initially can either help or hurt the business relationship. Extroverts have a fairly easy time building professional relationships, but introverts find it more difficult. Shy types are more reluctant and apprehensive when it comes to establishing new relationships with people but they can be just as successful.

Building professional relationships requires handing out cards, attending local events, and gladly shaking hands with everyone. When an individual looks at each business relationship as an investment, it becomes much easier to make the phone calls, book the lunches, and get to know people better. As a person begins to build relationships and their personal network expands, they are able to accomplish more because of the vast resources and insights provided to them by the people they have established business relationships with.

Attending different events opens the door to networking opportunities. These opportunities create fertile ground to start planting and building new professional relationships. Networking is so important that a recent article in the New York Times examined all of the new ways small businesses can engage in online networking to establish a professional presence. The article examined networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

The most important thing in a professional relationship is to be honest. People respect honest feedback, answers, and insight. An honest relationship builds trust which is a key ingredient to a successful relationship. Trust is also an effective tool to building strong relationships. Building a professional relationship is about building a friendly rapport where both parties are comfortable with each other while still maintaining the seriousness of the business relationship.

Communication is mandatory for any successful relationship. People often attempt to build professional relationships only to let them die due to a lack of communication. Corresponding with those you are in a relationship with can help build and mature the relationship. Keeping in contact with people is one of the most important parts of any relationship. Maintaining a relationship does require time and energy. In some cases when a relationship is not mutually energizing, an individual must learn when to stop investing too much of themselves in the relationship.

Unfortunately, every professional relationship will not be one that is easy to build or maintain. Most individuals have had to deal with someone who was very difficult to work with. The good thing about building relationships with difficult people is that it gives a person the chance to practice conflict resolution and teaches an individual how to deal with uncomfortable situations and people. This can be quite helpful in the long run.

A great professional relationship can benefit an individual in both the short term and long term. If the professional relationship is with an employer, an individual can use that person as a reference later when the person moves on to different things. By building professional business relationships, people have the chance to build useful contacts and develop life long friends in the process.
