Get Connected With an Online Nursing Degree

If you`re like a lot of the nurses I work with you`ve probably considered going back to nursing school to advance your career from LPN to RN, RN to BSN, going for a Masters in Nursing, becoming a Nurse Practitioner, or whatever, but haven`t actually done anything about it because it`s really hard to try to work and go to traditional classes locally. Even if you can figure out how to fit classes in around your shift schedule there`s the issues of whether your local university even has the nursing program you want to be in and when, or if, you can get accepted and get started. As an ER nurse for over twenty years I know all too well the problems with traditional campus based nursing programs! Online nursing education the solution you`ve been looking for.

Advancing your nursing career through an online nursing degree allows you to choose between a wide range of accredited nursing schools rather than being limited to whatever school happens to be within driving distance. You not only have the opportunity to attend some of the nations top ranked universities but you can also cherry pick your selection to choose the nursing school that offers the degree of your choice and the most flexible requirements. Earning your next nursing degree online rather than locally allows you to avoid waiting lists and get started immediately. Unlike traditional nursing schools, online nursing degree programs were created with the working nurse in mind so you don`t have to wonder how to juggle your work schedule around classes because the virtual classroom is open 24 hours a day and seven days a week so you can complete your nursing degree at your pace whenever and wherever it`s convenient for you.

What`s a "Virtual Classroom"?

Studying for an online nursing degree includes the use of an online learning system—a web-based medium for students and professors to communicate, typically called the virtual classroom. Typical online learning systems offer a variety of interactive tools to ensure seamless communication between students and instructors, and even between students. In fact, many online degree programs encourage students to meet in virtual classrooms in order to network together on projects and get to know each other. Nurses working on earning their next degree through an online nursing school often report they meet and get to know far more fellow nursing students via the virtual classroom than they would have had the opportunity to if they had returned to school part time at a traditional nursing school.

Virtual classrooms offer learning without boundaries to online nursing students via a plethora of innovative interactive multimedia technologies such as chat rooms, online forums, instant messaging, web conferencing, rich media presentations, and virtual whiteboards. Class schedule, assignments, announcements, and other structural elements are typically contained in folders within the virtual classroom and enable students to access and work on assignments at their own pace from any place they have internet access.

Classes are sometimes presented in a live format allowing online students to ask questions while class is in session, or presented by other formats such as video presentations that students can access at their leisure. Online education allows students from all over the country to get to know each other and take advantage of top notch educational tools including simulations, demos, tutorials, and a vast array of resources at their command. Online nursing students never have to set an appointment to get extra help from their professor, or meet with an academic adviser either. Thanks to the virtual classroom format online nursing degree students always have the means to be connected.

Making the Most of Your Online Nursing Classroom

1. Exchanging documents with your professor. Your professor may use a web-based process in the e-learning system to keep you informed about the latest course developments. You can receive documents electronically from your professor through internal email or by downloading posted materials directly to your PC. You can also send documents to the professor by uploading them as attachments in drop boxes, or you can email documents as attachments in the internal email system.

2. Clicking on helpful links provided by your professor. Some professors excel at choosing links to post on the e-learning system. These links expand your understanding of course topics beyond what you learn through class discussion and reading the textbook. Your professor may even provide links to publication manuals (i.e. APA and MLA). You should pay particular attention to resources like APA and MLA for how to cite primary and secondary sources in your research papers.

3. Accessing the electronic grade book. You can access the grade book in the virtual classroom to check your progress on assignments. The usefulness of your grades for improving your performance in the course may depend in part on how quickly your professor posts grades. When you are having trouble with assignments, don’t forget to use the internal email or the discussion forum to communicate with your professor.

4. Participating in the discussion forum. If your professor requires regular postings in the online discussion forum, make a note of the deadline for each posting on your calendar. The online discussion forum is also ideal for discussing group projects. Be sure to explore whether course discussions are viewable by the public. You don’t want to jeopardize your grade in the course by making inappropriate comments in the forum, such as complaining about your professor.

Your school provides a virtual classroom system to supplement or substitute for face-to-face instruction. Be sure to invest time in exploring the processes described above as well as other features of the e-learning system. Ask your professor or another student for help using e-learning tools you do not understand. In the end, the virtual classroom has the potential to help transform your online nursing degree experience from something that could be dull into an experience that`s as stimulating as it is addictive! Please try to remember to step away from the virtual classroom`s chat room in time to get some sleep before your next nursing shift.
