More Students Taking Advantage of Online Education
For example, communication with friends and family now zips through e-mail and gets posted on social networking sites, movies are rented online to arrive two days later in your mailbox, and grocery, gift and bargain shopping all happens on auction and discount Web sites -- also to be delivered directly to your home, saving you time and gas money.
But one of the largest growing fields for online usage is education. More than 3.9 million college students took at least one online course in the fall of 2007 -- the most recent year with data available -- according to an annual study done for the Sloan Consortium.
Stephanie Gardiner-Walsh, 25, of Winston-Salem, N.C. took her online education as remotely as she could. In May, she graduated from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix with a master`s degree in education, only stepping foot on campus once -- at the convocation ceremony where she was a featured speaker.
But she wasn`t the only one. About 83 percent of the 4,699 students graduating from the university completed their education through online courses, and many of those students, like Gardiner-Walsh, had never met their professors or fellow students in person until attending commencement.
What entices students like Gardiner-Walsh to pursue online degrees is the fact they can study, take exams, participate in classroom discussions and consult with a professor on their own time without having to travel or take a day off of work.
The best professors, according to GCU graduate Sarah Surrey, of Belleville, Ill., stay active with students and respond quickly to e-mail. Plus, the more professors interacted with student message boards, the more she learned about her classmates. Surrey received a degree in psychology, which she earned while working as a teleconferencing expert at Scott Air Force Base. She didn`t miss out on the fact she was 1,280 miles away from campus.
"I got to know other students -- where they were from, what they were doing," she says.
And because online education is a trend growing in popularity, financial aid is becoming more and more available to non-traditional and returning students.
GCU has scholarship incentives for high academic achievers and enrollment counselors to help students identify financial aid availability. Classes start every eight weeks to accommodate flexible schedules.
The only thing online education requires is a bit of self-motivation and discipline, says Gardiner-Walsh.
"I liked it. I`m really self-driven," she says.
