Preparing for a Career in Medical Transcription

The economic downturn has given rise to a growing trend of people finding creative ways to start their own business or do work at home jobs. Besides providing a way to earn a living during these times when traditional jobs are growing harder to find, working at home allows people to set their own schedule, and see more of their family as they work while enjoying good pay, job security, and the comforts of being at home. While many industries are downsizing and laying off workers the healthcare industry is contuing to grow despite the current economy, so if the opportunity to be your own boss is and become part of a growing industry appeals to you, then pursuing a career in medical transcription is an excellent choice. Medical Transcription is a career you can train for either at a campus near you or through online courses and the training is not overly long - allowing you the ability to be earning an income quickly. As a medical transcriptionist you could choose to run it as a business, be on call as a freelancer, or work as regular staff at a hospital, doctor’s office, or in a variety of other healthcare settings.
What You Should Know About Medical Transcription Careers
Medical transcription is not a complicated job at all. All it requires from you is dedication and focus. You can learn the ins and outs of the job within a short period. Transcription is basically the conversion of audio recordings into written text form. As medical transcriptionist, your job is to listen closely to the dictations of doctors and medical professionals, and then write them down to produce medical reports.
The listening device is a headset with an accompanying foot pedal to facilitate pausing of the recording as needed. You will then enter into a computer all that you’ve heard from the recording. Part of the job is editing the report to make it understandable and grammatically correct. The necessary skills in medical transcription are good listening and typing.
Required Knowledge as a Medical Transcriptionist
If you want to be effective as a medical transcriptionist, you must have a thorough understanding of what you are listening to. This is important to ensure the accuracy of your output. Do remember that your primary responsibility is to transcribe the oral report into a clear, truthful and intelligible report.
To assist you in understanding what is being said in the recording, it is necessary that you have basic knowledge of the following:
- Medical basics
- Structure, terms and function associated with every medical specialization
- Word structure, abbreviations and pronunciation of medical terms
- Anatomy, pathology and processes of all body systems
- Pharmacology -- names of drugs, standards and references
Additional Requirements for a Successful Career in Medical Transcription
There are at least three other requirements you will need to satisfy if you want to succeed as a medical transcriptionist. The first requirement is knowledge of the medical language, terminologies and abbreviations. Next is attentiveness so you can immediately note discrepancies and errors in the report as dictated. And lastly, research skills are needed in the validation of medical information contained in the report.
At this point, you are cautioned that although the job seems easy, a career in medical transcription carries with it a great deal of responsibility. There is no room for errors as another person’s health is at stake. If you submit an erroneous report, there is a big likelihood that the subject patient may be given the wrong treatment, which may either be ineffective or lead to complications. On the other hand, if you can confidently turn in an accurate report, the patient will be managed and treated appropriately. You can save a life just by doing your job well. Furthermore, you should know that hiring preference is given to individuals who have been properly trained in medical transcription. Therefore, you will be increasing your chances of getting assignments if you will undergo formal training for a medical transcription career.
