Achievers are a unique breed of people. They get things done. Despite the economy, financial or family problems, they resolve issues quickly and effectively. While the majority languish, struggling to pay their bills, the achiever enjoys the continuing fruits of success.

There`s no magic formula, heredity factors or an inheritance that marks the achiever from the rest of mankind. They have learned to discipline themselves for success. They have learned the rules that governs success, rules that anyone can employ to insure the same kind of success.

There are some seven basic rules, which, when applied, can turn around the fortunes for anyone who is willing to expend some effort to reaching a worthwhile goal.

1. A Strong Belief in Self

Achievers know their importance in the world and what they mean to others around them. They don`t take the advice of naysayers who tell them to accept the status quo. But they know they have a purpose in the world and it is their right to fulfill it. Their outlook is a positive one. They are responsible for their actions and don`t pin blame on anyone else.

2. The Ability to Plan

Goal setting and planning is not something many people look forward to doing. They would rather plan a wedding or a vacation than plan for a lifetime of accomplishment. Planning requires work and time, both of which do not produce immediate results. In a society of “get-rich-quick” and “I want it now” thinkers, planning is not a high priority in the average family. But the ability to plan is crucial to success in life and achievers have the skill.

3. A Vision

If it wasn`t for vision, there would be no Thomas Edison. The world would exist without light and hope. A vision is something that is hoped for combined with some action to make that vision a reality. The achiever always sees possibilities.

4. A Constant Learner

Many people simply stop learning once they have achieved a diploma. But the world is in constant flux. What works today won`t work tomorrow and to keep abreast of all the changes, learning is a requirement. Whether the achiever takes course, reads books in his chosen field or follows the steps of a mentor, he is always improving his skills.

5. Associating with Positive Minded People

Nothing kills desire more than living in a negative environment. Well-meaning friends belittle ambition, the daily news broadcasts the latest killings and hospitals are filled with depressed and psychiatric patients. All of them project the message that life is a hopeless activity and the only way to feel good is through a prescription. Ambitious people seldom spend time listening to bad news or reading the sensational headlines in the daily paper. They have more important things to do than stew over the world`s problems

6. A Good Deal of Patience

Patience is a quality that must be cultivated. The idea that anyone can get what they want by simply swiping a credit card has many headed into overwhelming debt. Anything worthwhile achieving takes time and patience. Thomas Edison tried a thousand experiments before he invented the light bulb. The achiever knows that patience is required as without it he would not learn the lessons that lead to success.

7. A Great Amount of Perseverance

Nothing worthwhile is ever accomplished unless a great deal of time and energy is expended. The men and women who have reached the pinnacle of success took many years of consistent effort to get where they wanted to be. Nelson Mandela believed in the rights of blacks in South Africa and spent 28 years behind bars before he became the president of the country that jailed him.

These are among the important qualities of achievement. Without them, goals can`t be reached. Self-analysis and honesty are the qualities needed before any campaign can be started. Dispensing with the false ideas of success that many have grown up to believe in lays the foundation of building a strong future. It takes time and effort, but the results are well worth it once achievement is secured.
