Army ROTC Nursing Program Scholarship Opportunity

Army Nurse ROTC experience will help you gain valuable leadership experience and management training that can benefit you in either a military or private-sector nursing career. ROTC can be taken without making a commitment to the military. As an elective, it is taken along-side civilian nursing curriculum courses. Enrolling in Army ROTC can enhance your leadership skills and critical-thinking abilities while providing financial support to help make your professional nursing goals a reality.
Curriculum
During the first 2 years of college, Army ROTC Basic Training involves learning beginning principles of leadership and military skills. You will be required to complete one elective course as well as a lab each semester, physical training and exercises in the field. Typical courses include: Intro to Army Leadership, Physical Fitness, Goal-Setting, and Military Operations/Tactics. During the sophomore year, coursework focuses upon the role of an officer.
Nurses Training
As an ROTC nursing student, you`ll combine college electives in military science with your regular nursing program. Army Nursing ROTC Cadets receive 1-1 training and mentoring, advanced clinical experiences and specialty training early in their careers, and financial aid for nursing school.
Nursing students also complete a summer training program. The Nurse Summer Training Program is a 3-week, fully paid program which assigns Army Nursing ROTC Cadets to a military hospital in the U.S. or Germany. Under the supervision of an experienced Army Nurse Corps Officer, you will obtain hands-on experience. Your one-on-one clinical experience will allow you to hone your clinical skills, develop your problem-solving techniques and become comfortable with developing your professional skills.
Upon completion of graduation and licensure requirements, cadets become commissioned as an Army Corps Nurse Officer, 2nd Lieutenant. Each new nurse officer is assigned to a military hospital as staff nurses on the general medical-surgical floor for their first year. Becoming charge nurses 6-9 months into their first year, they also receive specialty training in areas such as intensive care, emergency, psych and critical care within 2 years. They may also complete airborne or air assault training and become qualified flight nurses. As an Army Nurse, you can apply your nursing skills and have autonomy that isn`t available in the civilian community.
Financial Aid
Army ROTC scholarships are full-tuition and based on a student`s merit not financial need. There are also separate allowances for books and fees as well as stipends that are worth up to $5,000 annually, all of which allow students to focus on academics and their training rather than their finances. Receiving a scholarship involves making a commitment to military service.
Military Commitment
Army Nurse ROTC Cadets who receive scholarships are required to make a commitment to serve as nurses in the military for 8 years once they have completed their training. They have the option to serve 3-4 years full-time, and then complete the rest in Individual Ready Reserve. Some cadets can become eligible for service on a part-time basis in the U.S. Army Reserve or Army National Guard, as they pursue a civilian career.
The Individual Ready Reserve consists of fully trained experienced military people, who have previously served in an active-duty status. Individuals in the IRR can be called to serve in active military or reserve posts should the need arise. Once activated, the individual may be assigned anywhere in the U.S. or abroad. They go when and where they are needed.
Getting Started in Army ROTC Nursing
Those interested in becoming an Army Nurse Officer, can begin by contacting the ROTC/Military Science Department at the college or university at which they are enrolled, or planning to be. It is important to note that not all campuses offer ROTC; be sure to ask your academic adviser whether the school that interests you offers the ROTC program.
